Those shopping for shoes and clothing in Iowa on Friday and Saturday will not have to pay the state’s seven percent sales tax, as part of the annual sales tax holiday. Mike Schuring, President of the Pella Chamber of Commerce and owner of Franklin Street Clothing in Pella says his business is one of several that are offering additional sales on top of the tax exemption.

“We have quite a few markdowns already for summer clearance, and this is just a good opportunity for them to save a little bit extra and feel like they’re prepared for back-to-school, instead of maybe waiting until the weather changes.”

Schuring adds that with more people watching their budgets in recent years, shoppers have come to look forward to the first weekend of August as a time to save some money and get prepared for the fall. The sales tax holiday exempts most shoes and clothing items that cost $100 or less and runs through midnight Saturday.
