Central improved to 2-0 with a thrilling 28-23 win under the lights on the road at Augustana Saturday night.
The two teams fought to a 7-7 halftime tie after Central quarterback Nate Snead scored on a 22 yard run late in the first quarter and Augustana evened the score with under a minute to go in the first half. Central re gained the advantage with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter when Snead connected with his brother Jeremy on a short pass, then Augustana turned a Dutch miscue into a safety to cut the lead to 14-9.
The 7th ranked Dutch looked to be in control when quarterback Nate Snead scored on a 13 yard run just seconds into the fourth quarter to give Central a 21-9 lead, then following an Augustana score, the Snead to Snead connection hooked up again on a 60 yard score extending the lead to 28-16 with under three minutes remaining in the game. Augustana added one final score with under a minute to play but the Dutch hung on for the 28-23 win. ‘
Neither team ran the ball really well as Central gained 149 yards and the Dutch defense held Augustana to – 32 yards , but both teams lit it up through the air as Snead completed 20-30 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns but also threw four interceptions and was sacked three times and Augustana signal caller David Lee was 28-46 for 314 yards and three touchdowns and was sacked five times by the Dutch defense. Central returns home next Saturday to open defense of their Iowa Conference title as they host Dubuque at 1pm.
