The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union unanimously voted to expand Iowa girls’ high school soccer to three classes yesterday. The three-class change goes into effect with the 2011 spring season. The 32 largest soccer schools will make up Class 3A, the next largest 48 schools will make up Class 2A with the remaining schools competing in Class 1A. Regional and state tournament dates will remain unchanged. This marks the second change in classification for girls’ soccer since the IGHSAU sanctioned the sport in 1998. Starting with just one class, soccer moved to two classes in 2003. Pella, and Knoxville girls will most likely move up to Class 2A while Pella Christian should remain in Class 1A.
