Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz says hundreds, if not thousands of pelicans arrived over the weekend as they stopped in Iowa before heading south. Chief Golden Eagle was in town to bless the birds before they made their journey. Chief Golden Eagle is of the Yankton Sioux tribe of South Dakota. Some birds will stay around Marion County but Mertz says that the majority will be making their way to Mexico and South America.
