The Iowa State Patrol has released information regarding what was originally reported to be a four vehicle accident south of the Marion County Line on Highway 5 on Tuesday. Only three vehicles were involved. The State Patrol reports that Albia resident John Elliot, age 88 of Colorado had stopped on the highway to make a left hand turn from the northbound lane. Mitchell Ray Chance age 33 of Albia was also traveling northbound, and failed to recognize the stopped vehicle until the last moment. He attempted to avoid Eliot’s vehicle, but rear ended it, and then traveled into the southbound lane where he collided with a vehicle driven by 44 year old Missouri resident Steven Castaner. Elliot was transported to Albia Hospital but details on his condition have not been released. Pella Ambulance, Lovilla EMS, Bussey Fire and Rescue, Marion County Sheriff Deputies, Monroe County Sheriff Deputies and Iowa State Patrol among other first responders were paged to the scene.
