Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials are currently investigating the increase in Gizzard Shad in Iowa Lakes. Reports say that once Gizzard Shad is introduced to a small body of water, it ends up ruining it because no food is left for hatching game fish. State Conservation Officer Ken Kenyon tells KNIA/KRLS News that Gizzard Shad are in the Des Moines River in Marion County and haven’t been a problem. Kenyon says that anglers appreciate Shad in big bodies of water because their presence helps improve the number of White Bass they catch.
