28 year-old Tars Chasar of West Des Moines and his brother Jed were traveling northbound on highway 14 yesterday evening when they swerved to miss an object in the road and lost control. The accident happened on Hwy 14, approximately 1/2 mile north of Quebec in southern Marion County shortly before 6pm Sunday. Tars’ 2008 Toyota Scion entered the southbound ditch and rolled three times before coming to rest on its tires. The driver side door opened during the accident and Tars was partially ejected from the vehicle. Officials state both occupants were wearing their seatbelts during the accident which prevented Tars from being completely ejected from the vehicle. Columbia Fire and Rescue, Melcher-Dallas Fire and Rescue, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene. Tars sustained serious neck and back injuries, among others and was transported via LifeFlight to Iowa Methodist Hospital. Jed’s condition was evaluated by first responders on the scene and he was not transported to the hospital. Traffic on Hwy 14 was diverted for approximately one-half hour as the helicopter landed on the highway to pick up the injured individual for transport. No charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
