Pella stayed unbeaten on the season and clinched the Class 3A District Seven championship with a 20-0 win over Fairfield at home on senior night last night, despite committing three turnovers, including two in the red zone.

The Pella defense was the star of the game as they dominated all night holding a powerful Fairfield offense to just 158 total yards with eight quarterback sacks and recorded their fifth shutout of the season.

Pella scored on their opening offensive possession when quarterback Teag Klyn scampered in on a nine yard run on a fourth and inches play with 5:46 remaining in the opening quarter, the PAT was no good and the Little Dutch led 6-0. That’s the way it stayed until nine seconds remained in the third quarter when Klyn connected with Nick Dorman on a 10 yard pass to put Pella ahead 13-0. The final score came with 3:08 remaining in the game on a 36 yard halfback pass from Spencer Boeyink to Taylor Venteicher. Fairfield put together an impressive drive late in the game and threatened with a first and goal with under a minute to play, but once again the Pella defense slammed the door and took over on downs not allowing a score. Pella coach Jay Mckinstrey said their defense was put in several tough situations, but answered the call every time. He said although they don’t like to put them in those situations, it was good to see them respond because as they move into the post season and face tough competition, they may be in some of those situations again.

Several times throughout the game, Pella showed some new things on offense including the pistol formation, to allow quarterback Teag Klyn to run and had success, and Mckinstrey says with the playoffs just around the corner they continue to work on developing new offensive plays to use the strengths of their players.

Pella totaled 313 yards offense with a very balanced attack which included 189 rushing and 124 passing. Boeyink led the ground game with 10 carries for 57 yards, Alan Pfadenhauer carried five times for 44 yards, Teag Klyn had 13 carries for 34 yards and a score and Deckar Lynch carried 11 times for 33 yards. Klyn completed 9-13 passes for 88 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Josh Pringle had four catches for 31 yards to lead the receivers.

Pella improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in district play and clinched the outright district title securing them a home game in the opening round of the playoffs. Pella travels to Fort Madison Friday for the final regular season finale as they look to finish undefeated for only the second time in the past 14 years.
