The number of deer versus vehicle accidents are up 21% in the U.S. with Iowa ranking second in the nation. State Farm Insurance reports that 1 in every 67 drivers in the state will be involved in an accident with a deer in the next year. Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat says the fall is an active time for deer because farmers are moving crops out of the fields and it is also their mating season.

So far this year, more than 40 accidents involving at least $1,500 in damages have been recorded by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Goemaat encourages drivers to be extra cautious while driving, especially in rural areas. Those who are involved in an accident should call 911 immediately and report their location and damages occurred.
