With help from a career-best 25 points from Alyssa Schwartz, the Central College women’s basketball team picked up its third win of the season by defeating Westminster College 83-74 last night in Pella. In all, the Dutch had four players score in double figures – including Pella native Kelsey Schuring – who added ten points; as Central shot a blistering 61.2 percent from the floor. Central’s 3-1 record already exceeds last season’s total for wins and is the best start for the Dutch since the 2001-2002 season.

The Central College men’s basketball team had multiple chances to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but came up empty last night in Pella as Augsburg College escaped with a 62-60 win. Brock Caves led four players who scored in double figures for Central, as he tallied 14 points, but his put-back at the buzzer bounced out as the Auggies held on. Central led by seven at halftime, but Augsburg opened up the second half with a nine point run and never trailed again. The Central men are now 2-2 overall.
