The Iowa Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a family who sued the University of Northern Iowa after their child was injured on a field trip saying the waiver they signed was against public policy. Knoxville Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Flack says that they haven’t used waivers for trips for many years because according the school’s attorney, if the school is negligent, a parent or student can’t sign away any damages or injuries that might occur. Pella Schools Superintendent Mark Wittmer says that while they do use waivers, they don’t typically do a whole lot of good in the court of law. Wittmer says that the key is the district should have knowingly anticipated the problem that could arise and make sure there is plenty of supervision provided.
