The open to the Class 2-A State Volleyball Tournament is just days away, and Pella Christian is preparing themselves for what they hope will be a deep run in tournament play. Lady Eagles’ Head Volleyball Coach John Evenhouse says while his team is excited to be making a fourth straight trip to the state tournament, they’ve set a long-running goal for themselves to make it farther than just the first round.

“We’ve been talking since last August about getting to State and playing in the title game. That’s always a tough thing to do because you’ve got to go up to State and win two matches – and when you get there, there’s usually eight really good teams there,” says Evenhouse. ”We continue to talk about that. We’re 4-and-0 in postseason play – your goal is always to be 7-and-0 – but if we can get to the State Title game, anything can happen.”

To further prepare themselves for success in the opening round, Pella Christian held a scrimmage yesterday that included Grandview Park Baptist, Pella High, and Urbandale – which represent additional state qualifiers at the 1-A, 3-A and 4-A levels. The Lady Eagles will face Lake Mills in the first round of the Class 2-A bracket, with the opening serve scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
