Though the Iowa pertussis outbreak has not yet affected Marion County this season it is important to take the necessary steps to prevent catching the disease. Judi Van Hulzen, Registered Nurse with Marion County Public Health says often times, those with pertussis mistake it for the common cold. Van Hulzen recommends that residents simply listen to their body and be aware of their symptoms.
The Marion County Public Health department will be offering free school based tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis clinics next month and parents who would like their students to take advantage of this opportunity need to make sure the consent forms are returned to the school nurse by December 1st. The vaccinations will be offered to all students free of charge, regardless of insurance status, as long as the parental consent forms are received. The clinics will take place at Melcher-Dallas schools on December 2nd, Knoxville schools December 7th, Pleasantville schools December 15th and Pella Christian and Community schools on December 13th.
