Even without their five starters from a year ago, the Central College men’s basketball team pulled off something even last season’s Iowa Conference champions failed to achieve, stunning preseason favorite Loras College on the road Wednesday night, 74-64.  It was Central’s first victory over the Duhawks at Dubuque since a 75-63 triumph Feb. 21, 1992, snapping a 19-game streak.  Leading the Dutch in the upset in the conference season opener was senior guard Demarco Turner, who scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooring – including 4 three-pointers.

Central led 37-23 at halftime, stretching that lead all the way to 51-30 at one point, before the Duhawks began to chip away at the lead. Still, the Dutch were able to remain poised and hold out for the victory.  Even more impressive were the facts that Loras outshot the Dutch shot from the floor 51.1 percent to 47.3 percent, outrebounded Central 30-29 and even attempted six more free throws; but they also forced 18 Loras turnovers.  The win improves the Central men to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
