With freezing temperatures throughout the week, soon fishermen in the Marion County area will head to their favorite frozen bodies of water for ice fishing. Iowa State Game Warden Ken Kenyon tells KNIA/KRLS News that at a minimum people need to make sure that there is four inches of clear hard ice before stepping foot on it. Kenyon says the best way to do this is to auger a hole near the dock and then continue to auger every few feet that you move. Kenyon adds that if you are going to bring an ATV on the ice, there needs to be five inches of ice and a truck would require 12 inches of ice. While it’s important to make sure that the ice is thick enough, Kenyon says the best advice he can give is to never go alone and always tell someone exactly where you are.
