Just a little over three months ago, baby Laurelei was born to parents Lauretta MacCready and Shawn Melendez of Pella. On December 3rd, the newborn received a $1000 scholarship as part of the College Savings Iowa Baby 529 Giveaway. Proud parent Lauretta MacCready says that her first thought was that the scholarship was a scam and she didn’t think much about it. However, after countless phone calls she finally responded and found out that her child would have a head start at an education. The program selects one child from a random county in Iowa once per month, and Laurelei is the first to be chosen from Pella.
