The number of juniors who saw a significant amount of playing time last season for the Pella girls basketball team figured to be a great asset for the Lady Dutch throughout this season, and one of those players has already provided a glimpse of what she can add to the team in the coming weeks. Whitney Williams opened the 2010-2011 campaign with 11 points in a loss to Ballard, including several impressive drives at the basket.

Pella Head Coach Jerod Garland says Williams’ quickness was mainly utilized on defense last season, but says her offensive capabilities may sneak up on teams that don’t closely scout the Lady Dutch.

“Her role last year was really to play defense and use that quickness to pester people out there,” said Garland. “So coaches that are looking at our team might not expect her to score, but it’s nice to have that extra weapon out there.”

Williams and her teammates will try and track down their first win of the season on the road Saturday, as Pella travels to Mount Pleasant.
