The Pella boys basketball team overcame some early free throw-shooting woes to really pour it on in the second quarter as they rolled past Newton last night 78-50.

After a quick 10-2 run out of the gate for the Little Dutch, the Cardinals pulled back to within 17-8 by the end of the first quarter; after which things got pretty wild. A stifling defense forced Newton into numerous turnovers, while Pella rolled up 32 points in the second period alone. With a 49-25 halftime lead, the Little Dutch cut back on fouls in the second half to maintain their advantage and hold out for the victory.

Again the Pella boys had 12 players crack the scoring column – including three in double figures. Chris Bandstra led the way with 16 points; followed by 14 from Nick Dorman and 11 by Kyle Newendorp. With the win, the Little Dutch are now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
