The Marion County Board of Supervisors discussed a sewer infrastructure issue at the Community Action building at their meeting this morning. Several local officials were in attendance to add to the discussion including Cory Frank with Marion County Environmental Health, Engineer Roger Schletzbaum, Knoxville City Manager Dick Schrad, and contractor Adam Wadle.
According to Frank there is a broken sewer line near the facility that has resulted in raw sewage in the nearby ditch. This is something that is an immediate concern as it does not currently comply with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations.
Frank presented three options to the board including covering and monitoring the issue until spring and then making the necessary repairs, obtaining local bids to replace the system within the next week or attach on to the City of Knoxville’s sanitary sewer system. Schrad stated that the city did not have plans to hook up sewer in that area in the immediate future.
The supervisors also discussed, given the continuing problems with infrastructure in the area, including Knoxville Estates, that long term solutions could include annexation.
Frank stated that he received three bids from local contractors who would be able to install a new filtration system as soon as possible. A motion was made by Sam Nichols to accept the bid from Pella Precast Products for $10,000 for the installation of a Textile Fabric Filter, which was seconded by board Chair Howard Pothoven. During roll call the third supervisor, Jim Kingery voted “no” stating he wants people to be aware of the issue and wants a more permanent solution to the problem.
In addition, Schrad, Schletzbaum and other city and county officials plan to meet to further discuss possible long term solutions.
