Snow and ice are inevitable during Iowa winters but what we do to help control and remove them can make a large difference. Marion County Extension Office Program Director Dale Miller says deicing salts that are often used on roads, driveways and sidewalks can damage trees, shrubs and lawns. To help prevent such damage, Miller recommends diluting the mixture by adding in some sand to help gain traction on the surfaces. He also says adding deicing material before the snow or ice hits and then removing it when you shovel is helpful, that way it won’t sit on the plants for an extended amount of time and continue to harm the sensitive plants.
