With today being the first of the year, most people have either made or thought about a New Year’s resolution and quitting tobacco use is one of the most popular year after year. According to the Iowa Adult Tobacco Survey, 83 percent of smokers want to quit and because of this the Iowa Department of Public Health has started a new “Operation 83” campaign aimed at assisting those who want to break the cycle of tobacco addiction. Public Health representatives have been leveraging community partnerships since November to increase awareness and help local doctor’s offices and clinics introduce their patients to the free Quitline Iowa services. Diane Ellis with Marion County Public Health says with Quitline Iowa, trained professionals are there to offer support, insight and tips on how to quit through the phone and internet.
