A Marion County man, wanted in two southern states and caught in Knoxville last spring has been sentenced to 68 months in federal prison for possession of a stolen firearm and failure to register as a sex offender. 26 year-old Brady Austin Rogers of Knoxville was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Ronald E. Longstaff who also ordered him to serve five years of supervised release following his release from prison.

Rogers was arrested last April for second-degree theft and interference with official acts, in addition to the previously mentioned charges, after the Knoxville Police Department had reason to suspect that he was involved with motor vehicle break-ins in Westridge. During a search of his home officers recovered several items that had been previously reported stolen such as a rifle, computer parts, iPods, numerous cameras, tools and a key ring to an apartment complex.

While in the Marion County Jail officials discovered that Rogers was also wanted in Arkansas and Alabama for several charges including failure to register as a sex offender, parole violation, receiving stolen property, third degree burglary and breaking and entering of a vehicle.

The sex offender status stems from a conviction for felony sexual assault in Arkansas back in 2004. Rogers then left Arkansas and was residing in Alabama where he also did not comply with the sex offender registry requirements. A warrant was then issued for his arrest and prior to traveling to Iowa Rogers was featured on “Alabama’s Most Wanted”. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, a person who travels in interstate commerce and fails to comply with the relevant sex offender registration requirements is subject to federal prosecution under the criminal provisions of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

Rogers was taken into federal custody in July by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshall’s Office for possession of a stolen firearm by a felon and failure to register as a sex offender. At which time the additional local charges were dismissed.
