National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum Curator Tom Schmeh has once again been elected to the Iowa Museum Association’s Board of Directors. This is Schmeh’s second term on the board and he will also continue to serve as Chairman of the association’s fundraising committee. Schmeh tells KNIA/KRLS news he’s very excited to serve on the board for another term as he truly believes in their mission to bring professionals from throughout the state together for educational and networking opportunities.

He says it is especially gratifying to be able to serve on the board with Knoxville native graduate Tina Popson. Tina is the Education Program Manager at the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board and Hitchcock Nature Center. Schmeh says Popson volunteered and interned with the Hall of Fame and Museum when she was a student at Knoxville High School and Grinnell College and was one of their best staff people. He says it’s very neat to be working with her, all these years later, on a professional museum board.

Schmeh says he enjoys his position on the board and involvement in the fundraising committee because he knows that it takes money for non-profit organizations to survive and hopefully thrive. He says through the association he is able to continue to learn how other museums in Iowa operate and stresses how important it is for all of them to work together for the common good. Due to the tough economic times, Schmeh says it’s a difficult time for non-profits and is essential for them to stick together and learn from each other.
