The South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency announced record participation and near record recovery in the area’s household chemical collection program in the 2010 calendar year. Of the five collection events, a total of 533 families from Marion, Monroe, Lucas and Poweshiek counties dropped chemicals off at a permanent collection point at the regional landfill at least once. The Hazardous Waste Recovery Program was able to collect 15,905 pounds of chemicals that were directed to hazardous waste recycling or disposal facilities outside the state of Iowa. The previous high was during 1998 when 528 families dropped off 15,939 pounds of household chemicals.
