HCI Care Services, formerly known as the Hospice of Central Iowa, has been selected to receive two grants to help better the quality of life for its patients. HCI is one of five hospices in the nation chosen to receive the “We Honor Veterans” grant from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s Reaching Out program along with the Banfield Charitable Trust “Pet Peace of Mind” grant.

The NHPCO grant is worth a total of $34,000 which will be used to expand and increase the quality of care and services provided to veterans coping with life-limiting illness. Tray Wade, HCI Vice President of Patient and Family Care, says they’re honored to receive the grant to impact the lives of the veterans they serve and helping them come to terms with past events.

The “Pet Peace of Mind” grant is $5,000 and will be used to help assist patients and their families with caring for their pets by paying for identification tags, food, litter, grooming, vaccinations, boarding and spaying or neutering the animals. Wade says this program supports the unique bond between hospice patients and their pets and alleviates any worry they may have about their pets’ while in hospice care.
