A 41 year-old Knoxville man who was sentenced to life in prison for the September 2008 shooting death of Robert Ohl recently lost an appeal case for his first-degree murder conviction.

According to the court of appeals document, Steven Dean McGinnis argued the evidence was insufficient to support his conviction and the court erred in denying his motion to suppress evidence, denying his motion for a new trial and denying his claim of professional confidence privilege.

The Iowa Court of Appeals denied McGinnis’s appeal stating that they found no abuse of discretion and agreed with District Court Judge Martha Mertz’s original guilty ruling.

McGinnis was sentenced in November of 2009 and has since been serving time at the Iowa State Penitentiary.
