First responders in Pella say they understand the need for federal grant money in smaller communities like Harvey. Pella Ambulance Service Director Doug Polking says his department currently has grant proposals out to the Federal Emergency Management Administration, but adds that most grants go to Fire and Police Departments. Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom says his department has been able to procure federal funding in the past for things like new bunker gear. He says that emergency response crews in Pella are well supported and equipped which lessens the need for grants, but says they still apply for what they can to ensure they’re always properly prepared.
