Teachers Balancing Importance Of Handwriting, Computer Skills

As students are acclimated to the latest technology at ever-younger ages, there could be less emphasis put on teaching good penmanship. Pella Community Schools Director of Instruction Lowell Ernst says teachers face a balancing act of budgeting time to teach a skill for which there could be less demand, and also a skill set that is certainly in high demand. He says while it is important that students be able to read and write in cursive in situations such as college classrooms where the inability to read a professor’s notes could put them at a disadvantage. Ernst says this is part of a larger debate about the ever growing role of technology in the classroom.
