Asian Carp Still Need To Be Monitored This Fishing Season

Another fishing season is coming up. Marion County Conservation Officer Ken Kenyon reminds anglers to be mindful of what they’re using for bait in area lakes. He says the Asian silver carp that can cause a disturbance in recreation areas haven’t made it past the spillway of the Des Moines River. Kenyon says the possibility of a problem arises if the carp and shad, the species commonly used for bait found below the spillway, are confused, and a young silver carp is used for bait on the lake. He says the carp are known for jumping, and can present a hazard to boaters. To ensure the sliver carp remain below the spillway, Kenyon asks people to make sure they’re not using live bait on the lake.
