Central College men’s and women’s tennis coach Steve Tyler has been named the men’s 55 and over player of the year by the Missouri Valley division of the United States Professional Tennis Association.

The Missouri Valley division, comprised of Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa, recognized award winners in 16 categories at its recent annual convention. A selection committee identified certified professionals in good standing that have had excellent results in competitive tournaments, preferably those sanctioned by the USPTA or the United States Tennis Association.

Tyler competed in four doubles tournaments last year, winning two and claiming finalist honors in two. The committee also noted Tyler’s involvement outside of coaching and competition. He teaches adult women’s intermediate lessons and has established a Sunday afternoon drop-in center for the junior tennis community in Pella.

With the division’s recognition, Tyler is now eligible for a national award.

Tyler is in his third season at Central and has guided the Dutch to two top-four Iowa Conference team finishes. Tyler is a Fort Dodge native and has more than 30 years experience as a coach and amateur player.
