The Iowa house passed a bill this week that would allow parents to teach their children drivers education rather than having to take the classes from a certified instructor. House File 584 would require 30 hours of classroom instruction, 40 hours of street and highway driving and 4 hours of nighttime driving which exceeds the current requirements.

The bill now moves to the Senate where Minority Leader Paul McKinley says he thinks parents who home school their children should be allowed to also teach drivers ed. He says this would save a lot of money and according to the studies he has seen from states that do not require the course to be taught by a certified instructor there is no greater number of accidents or problems. McKinley says this issue should be a non-controversial issue though it has become a “political football”.
