Though he wasn’t coaching for the state title game he had hoped for, Pella Christian boys basketball coach Larry Hessing did get to be a part of Friday’s festivities at the State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines, as he was recognized for having reached a major milestone in his coaching career this season.

Hessing received recognition during the 4A semifinals for having reached his 500th career victory this past season, alongside a handful of coaching peers who also reached milestone victory marks in the 2010-2011 season. Hessing said it was a nice honor to be recognized before the crowd in attendance at Wells Fargo Arena, even if some of the Class 4A fans knew little about Class 2A basketball.

The Pella Christian boys’ win over Newton on January 7th, 2011 notched the milestone victory for their head coach. The Eagles would win 14 of their last 18 games to close out the season, ending with a loss to PCM in the State Quarterfinals. Pella Christian finished the season with an overall record of 20-6.
