A push to require schools to base classroom instruction time on a minimum number of hours rather than days would remove some control over scheduling from local districts, says Pella Schools Superintendent Mark Wittmer. He says the proposal requiring 1,080 hours of class time, rather than the current standard of 180 days, would likely create problems, especially for parents of younger children during events such as snow days. Wittmer says making decisions about scheduling are better left to local leaders, in order to best serve students, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
