The debate about preschool funding continues to be a topic of interest for many. Pella Schools Superintendent Mark Wittmer says currently the district is generating about $200,000 to cover the cost of preschool. If the state decides to end preschool funding, that program would be paid for through the special education budget which would then operate at a deficit. Wittmer says to avoid running deficits, the possibility exists that property taxes would go up to help cover some of these costs. He says the issue is complicated given the current state of the economy, and looks forward to a final decision that considers the best interests of students.
