Despite continuing to perform well at the plate, the Central College baseball team could not find the defense to slow down Buena Vista University, as the Beavers defeated the Dutch 9-7 Wednesday afternoon in Iowa Conference play.  Central out-hit BV 12-10 and held at least a share of the lead through six innings, but the Beavers turned two walks into the game’s winning runs in the seventh inning and held on for victory.
Pitcher Michael Jontz was credited with the loss, and was one of four Central hurlers used in the game.  Right fielder Jarred Lackey moved into first place on Central’s career runs batted in list, as a sacrifice grounder during a four-run first inning game him 131 for his career.
The Dutch are now 18-13 overall and 8-8 in the Iowa Conference and will host the struggling Rams of Cornell College in a three-game series beginning Friday in Pella.
