For the second straight week, five Central College athletes have been tabbed Iowa Conference player of the week honors. The Dutch are recognized in softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and men’s golf. It’s the third consecutive week a Central athlete has been cited.
First baseman Katie Tenboer is the softball position player of the week. Tenboer went 5-for-9 (.556), posting a .714 on-base percentage and six RBIs as the Dutch extended their winning streak to 18 games with a 4-0 weekend. Central topped No. 19 Washington 3-2 before escaping Dubuque 10-6 Friday and swept Wartburg, 10-0 (6 inn.) and 10-2 (5 inn.), Saturday.
Tenboer blasted two home runs and drove in five runs in the opener against Wartburg, launching into first place on Central’s career home runs list with 19. She also became the fourth player in the program’s history to homer twice in a game.
It’s the fourth time Tenboer has been named the league position player of the week. She received the honor March 21 when she was also the female athlete of the week. The 2010 conference position player of the year, Tenboer earned third-team all-America honors.
In women’s track and field, senior Jill Ziskovsky was cited as the field events athlete of the week. Ziskovsky captured the heptathlon title and automatically qualified for the NCAA championship meet at the Washington Univ. Invitational. She posted 4,603 points, narrowly missing a career-best mark, and won four of the seven events. Ziskovsky claimed the high jump (5-4.25), 200 meters (25.77 seconds), long jump (17-7) and 800 meters (2:22.52).
A three-time all-American, Ziskovsky has received the league honor four times. It is her second recognition during the outdoor season, being noted April 18, 2010.
Ethan Miller has been named the men’s field performer of the week. Miller won the decathlon with a career-best score 6,973 points and automatically qualified for the national meet. He topped the NCAA automatic qualifying mark by 373 points and improved his score by 111 points. Miller captured the 100-meters (10.97 seconds), long jump (23-10.25), high jump (6-6.75), 400-meters (51.14 seconds), 110-meter hurdles (15.02 seconds) and pole vault (14-3.25).
Miller is a three-time all-American. It’s the first time he has received the outdoor league award this season and the third time in his career. Miller was the conference outdoor co-MVP last season and was also cited as the Central Region’s outdoor field events athlete of the year.
Junior Kyle Wood is the men’s track performer of the week. Wood provisionally qualified for the national meet at the Central Invitational as a part of the 4×100 relay team. The squad finished in 41.76 seconds, good for first place and surpassing the NCAA-provisional qualifying mark of 41.95 seconds. Wood finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.01 seconds) and was part of the winning 4×400 relay team that crossed the line in 3:18.88. Central compiled 147 points to capture the men’s team title in the 11-team field. It is the first time Wood has received the league honor. He earned all-America distinction in 2010.
Senior Jason Harvey is the men’s golfer of the week. Harvey turned in a 2-under-par 70, one-shot shy of his Central career low, to take the first-round lead at the Loras Invitational. He shot 77 the second round and was beat out in a three-way first-place tiebreaker to finish third overall. Central won the 12-team tourney with 598, taking its second trophy of the week after winning the Simpson Invitational last Wednesday. Harvey is receiving the league honor for the first time.
