Combating fierce winds, the Central College men’s golf team fired a 288 to grab a two-shot lead after the first round of the 36-hole Loras Invitational Sunday.
Competing at the Meadows Golf Course near Dubuque, senior Jason Harvey turned in a 2-under-par 70, one shot shy of his Central career low. Justin Livingston followed with 71, Alex Huyser continued his hot streak with a 72, Brent Messmore had 75 and Matt Vegter shot 79.
Central’s White team shot 316. Drew Osier shot 76, CJ Gaston had 78, Brent Goodenow and Erik Grunder each shot 80 and Will Overlander had 81.
Complete team and individual standings are not yet available.
Winds are projected to reach near-unplayable levels and temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s Monday when the tourney concludes with 18 holes at the Thunder Hills Country Club in Peosta.
