Around 100 people turned out for the latest edition of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame’s Third Thursday Series Sprint Car 101. Last night long-time owner and mechanic Gil Sonner was honored. Sonner talked about his years not only fielding cars at Knoxville but running with the World of Outlaws and when his car won the King’s Royal at Eldora in 1996 with Johnny Herrera at the wheel. Sonner estimated that around 54 drivers have piloted his cars at one time or another. National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Executive Director Bob Baker says the Third Thursday Series lets fans get to know more than just the drivers. Sonner is set to field his familiar white and blue Casey’s sponsored number 47 this season with Don Droud Jr. behind the wheel in the 410 class at Knoxville. In related news, weather pending tonight fans can get a small preview of what drivers will be racing this season at Knoxville as it’s practice night. Next Saturday is opening night of the Knoxville Sprint Cup Series.
