Every spring many farmers and landowners burn off crops and leaves from their properties to prepare for the warmer months and planting seasons, though it’s important to take the necessary steps to do this responsibly. Sheriff Ron Goemaat reminds residents that they must plan ahead before burning by calling the Sheriff’s Office dispatch center to inform them of the burn and making sure there is fire suppression equipment readily available.
Goemaat says sending fire crews to controlled burns that were not called in results in tied up resources which could present a problem if that agency is needed at another emergency.
As a reminder, buildings cannot be burned without prior approval from your local fire chief.
