Traditional Tax Day has come and gone, but because of a little known federal holiday, late filers have until midnight tonight to get the IRS the proper paperwork. Emancipation Day, celebtrated in Washington D.C. every April 16th fell on a Saturday this year, and was recognized by the federal government pushing the deadline to today.
Emancipation Day celebrates the signing of Emancipation Compensation Act by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 which freed more than 3,000 slaves in DC 9 months before the President issued his Emancipation Proclomation.
