Early deficits were too much to dig out of for the Central College baseball team yesterday afternoon, as they dropped a pair of games to Buena Vista University – 7-2 and 5-2. The Beavers jumped out to early leads in both games, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one, and capitalizing on a two-run double to start fast in the nightcap.
Central was outhit by Buena Vista 18-13 between the two games, and were struck out a total of 12 times between the two games.
Pitcher Joel Pulliam took the loss in the opener to fall to 6-3 on the season; while Ryan Goetzinger gave up four earned runs on ten hits in six innings to take the loss in game two.
The Dutch did have something worth noting come out of the losses, though, as shortstop Mike Furlong had two assists on defense to break the school record of 302 set by Justin Owens from 2005 to 2008.
The losses drop Central to 21-15 overall and 11-10 in the Iowa Conference, with the regular season finale up next for the Dutch, as they travel to Luther on Friday to begin a three-game series.
