Two of our local girls and boys track and field squads will be competing in Eddyville today as the Class 2-A, District 3 meet will include teams from Pella Christian and PCM. Kevin Herdegen, head coach for the Pella Christian girls, says he’s trying to make sure that his squad doesn’t buy into the hype that sometimes goes with looking at statistics.
“I think every coach, and some athletes and parents look at QuikStats [statistics] online – and as I tell my girls – those are just stats to tell you where you line up to start your race, but they don’t tell you how you’re going to perform that day,” said Herdegen. “We really don’t know what’s going to happen, but we’re going to be out there and competing hard.”
Along with the girls and boys teams for the Eagles and Mustangs, other notable teams in District 3 for Class 2-A include Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg and Mediapolis. Only the winners of each event are guaranteed an automatic spot at the State Track Meet, with the remaining qualifiers to be determined based on times and distances throughout the state.
