The Pella girls and boys track squads held a benefit silent auction in honor of Athletic Director Bill Van Horn and Carol Schulte during their final regular season home meet Monday night to raise money for Hope Lodge in Iowa City, a facility which provides free lodging to cancer patients undergoing treatments at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. According to boys coach Brent Van Hauen the event went very well and they were able to raise $3000 which will be donated to Hope Lodge in the names of Van Horn and Schulte. Van Horn recently experienced Hope Lodge first hand while undergoing six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer in January. Van Horn continues his recovery at home currently and plans on beginning a second round of treatments which will consist of two different types of chemo administered on rotating weeks. Schulte is also recovering well following a bone marrow transplant in November after being diagnosed a second time with Leukemia.
