The Central College softball team finally ran out of steam in the Regional Championship game Monday afternoon, but not before knocking out Iowa Conference rival Coe College in the Regional Semifinals.
Back on the field less than 12 hours after staging a dramatic comeback on Sunday against Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Dutch downed the Kohawks 7-3 to extend their record-breaking season. Central out-hit Coe 9-6 and never trailed in the game – led by three hits and two runs scored by designated player Rachel Everingham.
However, the momentum for the Dutch came to a screeching halt against top-ranked Linfield, as Central was defeated 12-0 in five innings. On the heels of three victories in the past 24 hours, the Dutch were quickly subdued by the Wildcats, as Linfield scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning, 4 more in the 3rd, and 2 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings to end the game via the mercy rule.
Central’s 2011 season ends with a record of 39-9 while Linfield advances to the World Series later this week in Salem, Virginia.
