It’s going to be difficult to play much better than the Pella softball team is doing right now. Since a loss to Newton on Monday, the Lady Dutch have caught fire, overpowering teams with power hitting, and committing virtually no mistakes on defense.
The impressive play for the Pella softball team continued on Friday at the Ames tournament, where they secured a 6-3 win over Perry, before downing No. 8-ranked West Delaware 12-7. It was the second time this week the Lady Dutch have defeated a top ten-ranked 3A opponent.
In the win over Perry, Pella put up six hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance from Lisa Houser. Pitcher Mandy DeMeulenaere kept Perry at bay, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out six in five innings of work to earn the win.
Pella’s prowess at the plate continued against West Delaware, as power hitting put the Lady Dutch out in front for good, despite only out-hitting West Delaware 12-11.
Mackenzie Anthony crushed two home runs to bat in five runs for Pella, and Rachel Greving added a home run of her own, while Mandy DeMeulenaere and Lisa Houser each had three hits, and Whitney Williams slugged a double and a triple. All of that offense backed up pitcher Bri Arkema, who earned the win in six innings.
The sweep on day one of the two-day tournament improves Pella’s record to 14-5 overall, with a pair of 4A schools – North Scott and Ames – on the docket for today.
