At approximately 4pm today the Marion County Law Enforcement Center received a 911 call from a group of four kayakers in trouble because of winds gusting over 30mph and dangerous waves on Lake Red Rock. Sheriff Ron Goemaat tells KNIA/KRLS News that the Sheriff’s Office and the Corp of Engineers dispatched boats to the scene, and that the kayakers were rescued shortly after 5pm. No injuries were reported.
The kayakers entered the water at the Northwestern more narrow part of the lake near the location called the boxcars, where winds and waves were calmer, but conditions became treacherous as they entered the larger body of the lake. Goemaat says that the kayakers were fortunate that they had a cell phone, and that it is very important for all boaters in crafts large and small to pay close attention to lake and weather conditions.
