The Food and Drug Administration recently unveiled new, graphic warning labels for cigarettes. The new labels include what some are calling controversial images. These include darkened lungs and teeth, a dead body, and a cartoon baby in an incubator. With these images are messages about the dangers of smoking. The FDA says that the images are meant to increase awareness of specific health risks, like lung cancer, stroke, or heart disease. Jenn VandeKamp, with Marion County Public Health, says that she thinks these new labels will impact youth in a positive way, as it will help keep them from giving into peer pressure and picking up smoking. The new labels are required to cover the top half of each side of a carton of cigarettes, and will start being seen in September 2012.
