Pella Native Dr. John Hospers Dead At 93

One of Pella’s most noted native sons died Sunday. Dr. John Hospers, a relative of one of Pella’s founding fathers died at age 93 in Los Angeles.

Hospers was most famous for his 1972 Presidential run on the then-new Libertarian Party ticket just a year after publishing his book “Libertarianism: A Political Philosophy for Tomrrow”.

In addition to his political life and writings, Dr. Hospers published several books on ethics and philosophy. He was also well known as a friend to fiction writer Ayn Rand, with whom he engaged in public debates about epistemology, or the theory of knowledge.

Born in Pella in 1918, Hospers graduated from Central College in 1939, earned a graduate degree from in Literature from Iowa and a Ph. D. in Philosophy from Columbia.
