A combined 24 hits and big swinging lead changes made Tuesday afternoon’s non-conference game between the Pella High and Pella Christian baseball teams a thrill for fans, with the Little Dutch claiming a 12-9 win over their cross-town rivals at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Pella opened up the game with a five-run lead, scoring three in the first and two in the second, but promptly gave up a seven-spot to allow the Eagles to reclaim the lead.  Pella Christian added two more runs, and led 9-6 at one point, before the Little Dutch scored one more in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, Pella High’s bats caught fire, as they poured on five runs to take a 12-9 lead that would hold up for the game’s final score.  The Little Dutch ended up with 14 hits, with Pella Christian notching 10.
The win gives Pella an 8-12 record overall, and the team is 5-7 in the Little Hawkeye Conference entering Wednesday’s varsity doubleheader at home with Oskaloosa.
The Eagles also have a home varsity doubleheader this evening, as they try to build on a 14-8 overall record and a 9-3 league mark with South Tama coming to Pella Christian High School.
