All nine batters reached first base at least once and the Pella softball team methodically put runs up on the board on their way to an 8-1 win over Washington Monday night in the Class 3A Regional Semifinals.
The Lady Dutch scored in every inning but the second, turning 13 hits and 3 Demon errors into the necessary effort to support pitcher Mandy DeMeulenaere; moving to within one game of the State Tournament.
DeMeulenaere managed the game from the circle, faltering briefly in the third inning with a pair of walks, before regaining her composure and relying on mistake-free play in the field to finish the night allowing six hits, three walks and striking out four Washington batters.
At the plate, the top of the order for the Lady Dutch put the heat on the Demon defense, as Pella’s one through three hitters combined to go 9-for-12 at the plate, including a 4-for-4 performance by Whitney Williams that included a triple and three runs scored.
The Pella softball team is now 20-7 overall and earns a spot in the Class 3A Regional Finals in Oxford on Wednesday night. The Lady Dutch will face either Vinton-Shellsburg or Clear Creek-Amana. Those teams play each other Tuesday night in Oxford, after rain forced their game to be postponed.
